Arundel Literary Day – Thursday 2nd March

Arundel’s first ever Literary Festival featuring a whole day of readings, talks, presentations, workshops, discussions and opportunities to get involved with creative writing at all levels.

In the Red Room

Performances

10:30am – 6:00pm : Free

A day of poetry, prose and literary exploration presented in short talks, VIC talks, by a host of different authors, poets and active creative writers. Just dip in and dip out as you like – the full programme is still being developed, so check back here regularly for updates. The VIC Awards Ceremony – prize-giving and celebrity guest performances

7:30pm – 10:00pm : £12

The culmination of the Literary Day, with award of competition prizes, readings of winning entries, selected readings of workshop outputs, and featuring contributions from a number of distinguished poets and authors including Mandy Pannett, Donall Dempsey and Simon Brett.

In The Green Room

Poetry Workshop with Janice and Donall Dempsey.

10:30am – 12:30pm (with optional re-drafting 3:30pm-5pm) : £20

Janice and Donall are Guildford based poets with 6 years’ experience of working together as independent publishers Dempsey and Windle.

The workshop will develop ideas for producing up to 3 poems on the subject of Books and Reading, and is aimed at experienced writers. Maximum of 12 participants, first come first served.

Flash Fiction Workshop with Tracy Fells

1:00pm – 3:00pm : £20

Tracy is a West Sussex based writer of flash and micro fiction with over 100 short stories published online and in print journals (Twitter: @theliterarypig)

The workshop offers some approaches to writing flash fiction for those wanting to hone those skills or just interested in learning about this exciting and diverse branch of short fiction, and is aimed at all levels. Maximum of 12 participants, first come first served.

Process

10:30am – 6:00pm : Free

Talks and discussions on the process of writing and getting published with insights from a diverse group of people working in the literary world.

Competitions

Poetry Competition
Adjudicated by Chris Warren-Adamson

Chris is an Arundel based prize-winning writer, interested in exploring themes of place, film and memory of the past  by a weaving together of prose and poetry.

1st prize – £100 book vouchers
2nd prize – £50 book vouchers
Each entry must be an original, unpublished poem of up to 40 lines

Flash Fiction Competition
Adjudicated by Tracy Fells

Tracy is a West Sussex based writer of flash and micro fiction with over 100 short stories published online and in print journals (Twitter: @theliterarypig)

1st prize – £100 book vouchers
2nd prize – £50 book vouchers
Each entry must be an original, unpublished work of fiction of up to 500 words

Closing date for both competitions is February 25th. Winners will be notified on March 1st and invited to read their work, should they wish to, at the evening event of the Literary Day on March 2nd in the Victoria Institute.

How to enter:

1. Submit £5 entry fee (per poem or piece of fiction)

2. Email your entry to events@thevictoriainstitute.com

3. Include in your email:
– Your name
– Your contact phone number
– Your entry fee payment reference number

For both competitions, judges decisions are final. Copyright remains with the authors. Minimum age for entering either competition is 16 years.
