Welcome to The Vic
The name above the door says The Victoria Institute, but everyone who knows and loves this glorious building calls her ‘The Vic’.
She’s had more lives than a cat. From one of Sussex’s first saving banks in 1847 to snooker hall, then Sunday lunch club. From laundry and library to dance hall and disco.
Today, The Vic is home to artists, and art classes, yoga and dance classes, theatre, creative workshops and community events. When you step through the front door of The Vic, you enter the heart of Arundel’s artistic and creative world.
For her next life, we are working to create a new, innovative, exciting, cultural hub for our community in this historic building.
The Vic is a venue for all – and for all activities. Our vision is to make theatre, dance, the visual arts, and music more easily accessible to a much wider audience.
Since 1987, Drip Action Theatre has entertained audiences at The Vic with surprising, sometimes challenging, plays.
The Boathouse Ballet School welcomes boys and girls from 2½ to 12 for Saturday classes. Akin, Arundel’s Creative Collective network of commercial creatives meets monthly at The Vic.
You can hire our three multi-function rooms for classes, events, exhibitions, or parties. Have you seen the bars in The Red Room and The Green Room? They are party-perfect!
To protect The Vic and to create a community hub for arts and creativity, we never stop planning and fundraising. Our vision is to preserve and improve this historic building to develop what we can offer to future generations.
This year, we transformed The Red Room, at the back of the building into a modern multi-purpose space for theatre, music, community, private events – and a pop-up cinema.
Next up? Our outside spaces. And a vision to offer affordable spaces for people to hire for educational activities. The Vic was created for our community. That fuels our fundraising passion today.
We want to run summer schools for children and organise half-term/holiday events to introduce young people to theatre, dance, and music.
We want to tackle disability and learning difficulties in our community to welcome those who can feel excluded to enjoy creative and artistic activities.
Above all we want to support all Arundel creatives. The Vic is your space to network, organise meetings, present projects – or to host events and party.
We are always on the lookout for volunteers and for partners who might help us in our quest for these ambitions – please get in touch if you would like to help.

Slide Why Choose The Vic? Miss Emily, The Boathouse Ballet School “The Vic is our home. From ducklings to seniors, our students warm up for classes downstairs, while forging friendships. We dance upstairs, enjoying the light pouring in - and hopefully inspiring Saturday shoppers and tourists below with the music bursting forth from the windows.” Slide Why Choose The Vic? Dana Robertson, chair of Akin “The Vic is a wonderful building full of unique spaces, which is the cultural heart of Arundel. It supports dance, fine arts, commercial arts, theatre and film and other small commercial creative enterprises. The Vic's support for Akin has been invaluable and Akin are whole heartedly behind their future vision, to revitalise the building for the benefit of all in Arundel.” Slide Why Choose The Vic? Bill Brennan, Drip Action Theatre “The Vic’s Red Room has been our home since 2004. It’s the perfect intimate space for small scale plays. The staging is flexible with full lighting and sound facilities – and the bar adds to the theatre experience!” Slide Why Choose The Vic? James Stewart, owner of Zimmer Stewart Gallery and former Arundel mayor “The Vic is the beating heart of town’s creativity, both for Arundel residents and visitors. Whether it’s a music, art or drama event; a place to for creative meetings like Akin, a location for photo/film shoots or simply a place for artists to work and exhibit – Arundel’s cultural centre is at The Vic.”
